The painter and printmaker, John Kelly, has died at his home in Dublin at the age of 74.

Born in Dublin in 1932, he studied at the National College of Art & Design.

He participated in numerous Irish and international group exhibitions, winning first prize for Ireland at Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1977.

He won the Oireachtas Waterford Glass Award in 1975, the Oireachtas Douglas Hyde Gold Medal in 1992, and the Irish Exhibition of Living Art Carroll's Award in 1980.

A member of Aosdána and of the Royal Hibernian Academy, he was also a founder of the Project Arts Centre and of the Graphic Studio and the Black Church Print Studio in Dublin. 

Mr Kelly’s work is held in public collections at the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, Trinity College Dublin, the Arts Council, DCU, the Bank of Ireland and the Gordon Lambert Collection.
