A 21-year-old London-Irish man is in a critical condition at a hospital in Britain following a clinical drugs trial.
Ryan Wilson Flanagan, whose mother is from Dublin, is one of two men fighting for their lives after taking a new drug designed to treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and leukaemia.
He and five other young volunteers were admitted to intensive care following the trial on Monday. The other four are said to be seriously unwell.
It was the first time the drug had been tested on humans.
The German drug manufacturer, TeGenero, has apologised to the families and has described the men's reactions as 'shocking developments'.
Meanwhile, the Irish Medicines Board has said the drug used in the London trials had not been used in such tests in Ireland.
