Prosecutors in the trial of Zacarias Moussaoui say he should be executed for his role in the 11 September attacks on the US.

The trial of Moussaoui, the only person charged in the US in connection with the terrorist attacks, opened in Virginia yesterday.

The 37-year-old French national was already in prison when the attacks took place but he has pleaded guilty to six charges of conspiracy.

He was arrested weeks earlier when the instructors of a flight school he was attending became suspicious because he requested training on a Boeing 747.

The trial could last up to three months and hundreds of relatives of those killed in the 2001 attacks are watching it live by video link from special courtrooms around the US.
