Aer Lingus has announced it made an operating profit of €72 million last year, down from €107 million in 2004.

The results are its last set of accounts before an expected privatisation later this year.

The results show sales fell from €906 million to €883 million.

The airline said it faced significant challenges in 2005, including high fuel costs, fierce competition and changes in work practices.

The Aer Lingus Chief Executive, Dermot Mannion, said customers had benefited from significant fare reductions and increased enhancement of the airline’s route network.
