An American man who is wanted in the United States on charges arising out of a road traffic accident which left three students dead has begun High Court proceedings to stop his extradition.

Fredrick David Russell is alleged to have skipped bail in Washington state after being charged with vehicular homicide and vehicular assault in 2001.

He was arrested in Dublin city centre last November where he was working as a security man in a clothes shop.

At the time he was living under an alias with his Irish girlfriend in Celbridge in Co Kildare.

The US Marshals Service had received a tip off about his whereabouts after his name was put on its '15 Most Wanted' list.
