A Waterford garda has appeared before Waterford Circuit Criminal Court today charged with the harassment of a woman who works with his wife.

Anthony Fennelly is charged with harassment on dates between 12-15 November 2003 against Amanda Cox.

The court was told that Garda Fennelly first made unwarranted advances towards Ms Cox at a Christmas party in December 2001.

Mr Fennelly later apologised but the court was told 18 months later the garda gained access to Ms Cox's back garden and took two items of her underwear.

The prosecution said Ms Cox received a number of unusual phonecalls on 13 November 2003.

When she questioned one of the callers he said there was a flyer in a phone box saying she was available for sex, the court heard.

Ms Cox then reported the matter to Waterford Gardaí. Mr Fennelly is currently suspended from duty.
