A man in his 50s has been charged in connection with the murder of John Mahon in Fermoy, Co Cork.
John Collins, with an address at Francis Street in Fermoy, was brought before a special sitting of Mitchelstown District Court this evening.
Mr Mahon, 60, was shot dead close to his home at St Bernard's Place at about 12.30am yesterday morning.
He had earlier been involved in a verbal dispute with another man on Fermoy bridge.
The father-of-five was a self-employed painting contractor. A native of Fermoy and a former member of the army, Mr Mahon was a keen boxer and re-established the local club in 1981.
He was president of the Munster Council of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association and its national vice president. Last month, he was voted the leading boxing judge in the country by members of the IABA.
A full post mortem examination on the body of Mr Mahon took place in Cork last night and preparations are being made for his funeral.
