The Assistant State Pathologist, Margaret Bolster, is carrying out a post mortem examination on John Mahon, the 60-year-old father of five shot dead in Fermoy, Co Cork, early this morning.

Mr Mahon was a former international boxing referee and a senior official with the Munster Boxing Association.

It is believed he was shot a number of times. The results of the post mortem are not expected tonight.

Mr Mahon was drinking in a pub in Fermoy last night and sometime before midnight he was seen having a verbal row with another man on the bridge in Fermoy.

Less than half an hour later, when he was going into his house in the St Bernard's Place housing estate on the Dublin side of the town, he was approached by a man who fired at least one shot.

Mr Mahon was wounded but he managed to run 150 yards towards his sister’s house, which is also on the estate.

His attacker caught up with him just before he got into the house and fired more shots, killing Mr Mahon in the front garden of the property.

The assailant then walked away but may have had a car waiting nearby.

The Assistant State Pathologist carried out a preliminary examination on his body at the scene.

Gardaí are appealing for help from the public in relation to his death.

They would particularly like to talk to a man whom they believe saw Mr Mahon last night. He is described as 5' 8" in height, in his late 40s or early 50s, with grey hair and may have been wearing a green jacket.
