A man has appeared at a special sitting of Cavan District Court in connection the death of a 21-year-old Co Kildare woman in Cavan town last night.
Brendan McGahern, 26, with an address at Drumcarey, Corlismore, Co Cavan, was charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Amy Farrell at Swellan Upper, Cavan Town, last night.
Mr McGahern was denied bail and was remanded in custody at Castlerea Prison to appear before Harristown District Court next Friday.
His solicitor said he would be pleading not guilty.
Earlier, post mortem results revealed that the victim died from knife wounds.
It also emerged that she was the mother of a two-year-old boy. It is understood the child was not in the house when the incident took place last night.
The boy's father is believed to be caring for him today.

It is understood she had received stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
