The British fathers’ rights group, Fathers 4 Justice, is to disband following allegations that extremists linked to the group had discussed kidnapping the Prime Minister's youngest son, its founder member Matt O'Connor announced tonight.

Speaking on Channel 4 News, Mr O'Connor said: ‘We will cease all operations and bring the campaign to a close.’

In a report in this morning's Sun newspaper, it was alleged that the extremist sympathisers linked to the group, which fights for fathers' rights to see their children, were involved in a plot to kidnap five-year-old Leo Blair.

Security is said to have been stepped up around Mr Blair and his family after police confirmed they had been investigating suggestions of such a plot.

Reports suggest Scotland Yard officers became aware of suggestions of a plan but the plot only got as far as what they describe as the 'chattering stage'.

No real reconnaissance was carried out and no actual kidnap attempt was made. Police are not convinced those behind the alleged plan had the capability to carry it out.

Fathers 4 Justice Spokesman John Ison earlier said the group had taken steps to try to get rid of unwanted elements.

Fathers 4 Justice had become known for high-profile rooftop protests. In one incident activists dressed in costumes climbed onto a Buckingham Palace balcony.
