Galway Cllr denies misappropriation charges

A Galway county councillor has pleaded not guilty to a series of charges involving the alleged misappropriation of €7,500 from the council between 2001 and 2003.

Councillor Michael Fahy of Caherduff, Ardrahan, appeared before the District Court in Kinvara today and opted to have the charges tried before a judge and jury in the circuit court.

Mr Fahy has been a member of Galway County Council for 25 years and resigned from Fianna Fáil in 2004 pending the outcome of the garda investigation.

At Kinvara District Court today, he appeared on eight separate charges under the Criminal Justice Fraud and Theft Act.

It was asked that the case be adjourned to allow for the Book of Evidence to be finalised and served on the defendant.

Judge Joseph Mangan remanded Mr Fahy to appear before the district court in Kinvara again on 30 March.
