Gardaí have opened an investigation into the disappearance of €40,000 from a Dublin garda station.
A garda spokeswoman said it was not clear where the money had come from, but it is thought to have been stored at Fitzgibbon Street Garda Station after it had been seized during a drugs raid a number of years ago.
It is understood the cash was found to be missing in the last two or three days.
The Garda Commissioner, Noel Conroy, has appointed a local Superintendent to head the investigation into the disappearance.
A garda spokeswoman said he would speak to all those who had been involved in the seizure and storage of the money.
The spokeswoman added that there might turn out to be a simple explanation, like a matter of records being misplaced.
