Former pop star charged in Vietnam

The authorities in Vietnam say the disgraced British pop star, Gary Glitter, has been charged with committing obscene acts with two girls aged ten and 11.

A prosecutor said the charges carry prison terms of three to seven years.

The 61-year-old singer, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was arrested at Ho Chi Minh City airport as he tried to flee the country in November amid allegations made by two underage girls.

Reports from Vietnam say police investigators have said there is not enough evidence to press a child rape charge, which carries a maximum penalty of death by firing squad.

Glitter won fame as a flamboyant glam rock star in the 1970s.

However, his image was tarnished when he was convicted in Britain in 1999 of possessing child pornography.

He served half of a four-month jail sentence and later went to Cambodia, which permanently expelled him in 2002.
