A baby girl born in St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny was the first baby born in Ireland in 2006.
The baby girl weighing 6 pounds 11 ounces was born at two minutes past midnight.
Her arrival was quickly followed by the birth of a baby boy at St Munchin's Hospital in Limerick at three minutes past midnight. Close behind him was another baby girl born at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin at four minutes past midnight with another girl arriving at 12.05 at Letterkenny General Hospital.
