Pope Benedict has praised the ‘significant progress’ made towards achieving peace in Northern Ireland.
He said the most visible sign of the growth of mutual trust was the recent decommissioning of weapons by the IRA.
The Pope was speaking during a private ceremony in Rome, where he accepted the credentials of the UK's new ambassador to the Vatican, Francis Campbell.
