The Dalai Lama has been carrying out a number of engagements on the second day of a three-day visit to Northern Ireland to highlight the spiritual dimension of peace.

This morning the exiled Tibetan leader, along with poet Michael Longley, officially opened the headquarters of Mediation Northern Ireland in south Belfast.

This afternoon the Dalai Lama was to address members of the Community Relations Council.

The 70-year-old’s visit, his first to Northern Ireland since 2000, follows a 19-day visit to the US in which he met the US President, George W Bush, and other leaders.

He also completed two days of engagements in Scotland.

The Dalai Lama has lived in India since he fled from Chinese troops in 1959.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent struggle for Tibet.
