Syria has come under increasing political pressure as the UN continues its probe into the killing of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri earlier this year.

In the United States, George Bush warned Syria that it must co-operate fully with the inquiry and stop attempts to intimidate Lebanon.

In Beirut, UN investigators have taken a statement from Lebanese President, Emile Lahoud, a Syrian ally.

A UN interim report on the killing has implicated officials from Syria and Lebanon.
