The Lebanese authorities have arrested a man in connection with the murder of the former Prime Minister, Rafiq Hariri.

The arrest is the fifth carried out in relation to the assassination last February.

It is the first since the release of a United Nations report last Thursday that pointed to heavy local and Syrian involvement in the plot.

The detained man, Mahmoud Abdel-Al, is accused of telephoning the pro-Syrian President of Lebanon, Emile Lahoud, minutes before a huge car bomb exploded, killing Mr Hariri and 19 others.

Mr Lahoud's spokesman has strongly denied that the President had been in contact with Mr Abdel-Al.
