An inmate in Mountjoy jail is in a critical condition in hospital after he was stabbed in the neck this morning.

The 26-year-old man had only been sent to Mountjoy yesterday afternoon after he was convicted of a drugs offence and sentenced to two months in prison.

At around 11am this morning he was attacked in the A-wing recreation yard and stabbed a number of times in the neck.

He managed to approach and alert prison officers and was rushed by ambulance to the Mater Hospital across the road where his condition is described as critical.

The gardaí have been called into the prison to investigate the attack and the yard has now been sealed off. Inmates are allowed into the recreation area between 10am and 12pm in the morning. So far no inmate has been identified as the attacker.

The Prison Service has confirmed that the stabbing took place and has described the inmate's injuries as potentially very serious. The Governor is also carrying out an inquiry and the Prison Service is contacting the man's family to appraise them of the situtation.
