Fine Gael has proposed an overhaul of the laws governing the sale and use of fireworks.
The party's spokesman on Justice, Jim O'Keeffe, described the present legislation as antiquated and almost impossible to enforce.
He said the law was 130 years old and that offences relating to fireworks carried an outdated maximum fine of only €7.
Official figures obtained by Deputy O'Keeffe suggest that the number of individual fireworks seized annually by gardaí has increased by more than 500% since the year 2000.
