European Union leaders have condemned the call by Iran's President that Israel should be 'wiped off the map'.
The Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, made the remark yesterday at a conference in Tehran.
In a message sent from the EU leaders' summit at Hampton Court Palace, west of London, the 25 leaders said the incitement to violence was despicable and unacceptable.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, earlier added his voice to the condemnation of Mr Ahmadinejad's comments.
Mr Ahern said the Iranian embassy in Dublin had been told that the comment was unacceptable and contributed nothing to Iran's relations with the European Union.
A number of countries, including Britain, Canada, France and Spain have summoned Iranian diplomats to protest about the remark.
And the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, said the remark was completely unacceptable.
A spokesman for US President George W Bush said the comment underscored concerns about the Iranian nuclear programme which the United States suspects is being used to develop weapons.
