The African American woman who helped pioneer the civil rights movement in the US, Rosa Parks, has died at the age of 92.

Ms Parks inspired black people when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama, in December 1955. She was arrested and fined $14.

Her arrest under the city's segregation laws led to a boycott of the bus system by African Americans and began the civil rights struggle in the US.

A year later, the US Supreme Court found that the segregation of Montgomery's bus system was unconstitutional and public transport was desegregated in all US cities.

The struggle for equal housing and voting rights and the desegregation of schools in parts of the south was to continue.

Rosa Parks eventually left Alabama and moved to Detroit where she worked in politics. She died yesterday after a short illness.
