The 2005 Nobel Prize for Literature has been awarded to the British playwright, Harold Pinter.

In its citation, the Swedish Academy said Mr Pinter's work uncovered the precipice under everyday prattle.

Mr Pinter, who is 75, has been long established as one of the greatest playwrights of the past century.

He has written more than 30 plays, as well as poetry, prose and screen adaptations.

He visited the Gate Theatre in Dublin last weekend as part of a celebration of his work which is running in association with the Dublin Theatre Festival.

His play Betrayal opens at the Gate tomorrow night.
