The Chairman of the Local Drugs Task Force Network has called on the Government to give communities more help and resources to tackle the drugs problem in their areas.

Speaking at the network's first national conference in Dublin today, David Connolly said they were very concerned about the growing use of heroin and cocaine in cities and towns outside Dublin.

Mr Connolly warned that these areas could suffer the same devastation that some parts of Dublin experienced ten years ago if the Government and State bodies do not become more pro-active at community level.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, told the 400 delegates attending the conference that the Government was committed to tackling the issue.
