Two Cloverhill Prison officers in hospital

Two prison officers are being treated in hospital following an incident at Cloverhill Prison in Clondalkin in Dublin yesterday afternoon.

A third officer who was also injured has been discharged from hospital.

The incident occurred at 4.35pm when a prison officer confronted a prisoner who had taken a kettle out of his cell, which is not permitted.

The prisoner struck the officer on the nose with the kettle. The officer was taken to Tallaght Hospital and detained overnight. It is thought he may have a broken nose.

A second prison officer was hit on the side of the head. He was taken to the Eye and Ear Hospital on Adelaide Road where he was also kept overnight.

A third officer was bitten on the hand. He was taken to hospital where he was given a tetanus injection before being discharged.

A spokesperson for the Prison Service said that the prison’s governor is awaiting a report from the prison officers and a full investigation will take place.

In the meantime the prisoner has had his privileges withdrawn for a period of two months, the spokesperson said.
