A man is in a critical condition in hospital following what police suspect was a sectarian attack in east Belfast.

The 29-year-old Catholic man suffered head injuries after he was attacked on a riverside path at the junction of the Ravenhill Road and the Short Strand in east Belfast.

Police say eight to ten men were involved in the attack and they ran off up the Ravenhill Road.
