Figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted Live Register total increased from 158,900 in July to 159,100 in August, an increase of 200.

This compares with an increase of 2,600 in July.

The CSO figures also show that in the year to August 2005, there was an unadjusted decrease of 6,423, a fall of 3.7%.

This compares with an unadjusted decrease of 8,992 in the year to July 2005, a decrease of 5.1%.

The unemployment rate stood at 4.3% in August, unchanged from July.

The CSO says that there was an unadjusted monthly increase of 884 on the Live Register in August, which reflected increases in all regions.

The largest percentage increase was in the mideast region (up 1.3%), while the smallest increase was recorded in the southeast region (up 0.1%).

Countrywide, the largest percentage increases were in Roscommon and Meath, which both saw 2% rises and in Kildare, up 1.5%.

The largest percentage decreases were seen in Carlow (down 2.1%) and in Tipperary South (down 1.8%).
