Dublin, Waterford and Limerick have been earmarked for a total of 800 new housing units, which Focus Ireland plans to provide over the next five years.

The homes will be grant-aided and built in partnership with housing agencies and building schemes.

While progress has been made in addressing homelessness in recent years, the charity stressed that only the provision of social housing would solve the problem in the long term.

Launching Focus Ireland's annual report today, Chief Executive Declan Jones called on the Government to increase the provision of social housing by 73,000 by 2012.

This figure would be in line with recommendations made by the National, Economic and Social Council.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Catherine Byrne said Dublin City Council remained committed to working towards alleviating homelessness in the capital.
