Five remanded in extortion racket probe

Five Lithuanian men arrested by gardaí investigating a suspected extortion racket in Co Monaghan have been remanded in custody at Drogheda District Court.

The men are all facing a charge of stealing a car in Ballybay, Co Monaghan, on Sunday.

The five were among a total of eight people arrested by gardaí in the Ballybay area last night. Three vehicles were also seized.

Gardaí told the court that more serious charges are being considered against the five.

Three of the eight people arrested, two women and a man, were charged earlier and released.

They are due to appear in court at a later date.
