Belfast - Riots broke out last night

Police in Northern Ireland have said they believe that a loyalist riot in north Belfast last night was aimed at disrupting investigations into the feud between the LVF and the UVF.

The disturbances followed the arrest of six men in connection with the feud in which three men have been murdered.

At least 40 police officers were injured during the disturbances which broke out yesterday evening in the Woodvale area off the Crumlin Road.

The situation in the area had been tense from early yesterday as police searched a number of homes.

In the late evening masked youths began hijacking vehicles, several of which were set on fire.

Petrol bombs, paint bombs and other missiles, including a blast bomb, were thrown at police who fired 11 baton rounds.

Some community representatives criticised what they called the heavy-handed tactics of some police officers during the day.

At the height of the troubles the police had fired three plastic bullets.
