A suspect in the failed attempt to bomb the London transport system on 21 July will face an extradition hearing in Rome next Saturday.

The Italian government named the suspect as Osman Hussain, born in Ethiopia, and arrested on Friday at an apartment outside Rome's historic centre.

Mr Hussain, one of four prime suspects tied to four failed attacks on London's transportation network, is accused of trying to explode a device on an underground train.

The head of Rome's anti-terrorist police has said Mr Hussain had no links with any Islamic terrorist cells under investigation in Italy. Carlo de Stefano told a news conference that he appeared to have belonged to a spontaneous group in Britain.

Meanwhile, British police say they arrested two men under anti-terrorism laws in south London today in three raids linked to the 21 July bomb attempts.

A police spokesman said they were arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

Third suicide group reports played down

Scotland Yard has played down reports that a third group of suicide bombers was on the verge of staging an attack on London's tube system last week.

Security sources reportedly told an English newspaper about the plot but the Metropolitan police said the story was media speculation.

Police in Britain are maintaining a high-profile security operation in case of another attack.

Officers flooded the London transport system during this morning's rush hour to reassure commuters and deter any would-be attackers.
