Lawyers for Saddam Hussein have said the former Iraqi leader was attacked by an unidentified man in Baghdad after he was questioned by a special tribunal set up to try him.

The lawyers said there was an exchange of blows when Saddam Hussein was attacked as he was leaving the courtroom on Thursday.

However, a US military spokeswoman denied that any such incident happened.

The former president was being questioned about his alleged role in the suppression of Kurdish and Shia uprisings in 1991. The allegations are expected to be part of the basis of his trial.
