John Gilligan - Drug dealer back in court

Convicted drug dealer John Gilligan was back in the Supreme Court today in another bid to overturn his conviction.

He is serving 20 years for a range of drug-related offences.

He previously failed to overturn his conviction in the Court of Criminal Appeal but had his sentence reduced from 28 years to 20 years.

That court also granted him the right to refer points of law to the Supreme Court.

The Court of Criminal Appeal found that two points of law arose from the decision dismissing his appeal that were of such exceptional public importance that they required to be determined by the Supreme Court.

These points relate to the Witness Protection Programme and the nature of the corroborative evidence required from accomplice witnesses in such circumstances.
