The American Ireland Fund has announced over $10 million in financial support for 300 charities and community groups on the island of Ireland.

The funding is made up of grants and direct philanthropic donations.

It will be used to support a wide range of initiatives with a focus on programmes addressing peace and reconciliation and mental health and suicide.

Among the organisations to receive support will be the Cork Counselling Centre, GOAL, the Ardoyne Youth Club and the Conflict Trauma Resource Centre in Belfast.

The announcement was made in Cork today where members of the AIF met for the first time at University College Cork.

The AIF also announced that the short story writer, William Trevor, a native of Buttevant in Co Cork, is to receive the 34th American Ireland Fund literary award of $25,000 at a function in the university later tonight.
