Padraig Slattery - Club has been vindicated

The Equality Authority has said it is considering appealing today's High Court ruling allowing Portmarnock Golf Club to continue to prevent women from becoming full members.

The court overturned a decision by the District Court last year that the club was a discriminating club under the terms of the equal status act.

Portmarnock Golf Club has claimed that the act interfered with its members right to freedom of association.

Women can play at the club but they are not allowed to become full members.

The club's captain, Padraig Slattery, said the club had been vindicated by the decision.

The Equality Authority said it was disappointed and would be exploring the possibility of an appeal.
