The family of the late John Carthy, who was shot dead by gardaí in Abbeylara, have called on the Garda Commissioner to reject plans for the retirement of Supt Joseph Shelley.
Mr Shelley was the scene commander in Abbeylara five years ago, and the family wants his retirement delayed until such a time as the Barr tribunal has issued its final report.
Speaking to RTÉ News, Mr Carthy's sister Marie said the family were calling on the Garda Commissioner to suspend Supt Shelley before his retirement date so that he could remain in the force until Mr Justice Robert Barr had concluded his findings.
Ms Carthy said it was absolutely disgraceful that Supt Shelley was being allowed retire on a full pension while he was the subject of serious allegations which are presently been investigated by a High Court judge.
Ms Carthy said her family felt it was more appropriate for the Garda Commissioner to suspend Supt Shelley in the present circumstances and await the outcome of the Barr Tribunal.
