The trial has opened in the Central Criminal Court of two men accused of murdering a 25-year-old Dublin man as he sat in a car outside Cloverhill Prison last year.

35-year-old Brian Kenny from Kilshane Cross in Finglas and Thomas Hinchon, aged 24 and from Clondalkin, both deny the murder of Jonathan O'Reilly. They also deny a number of other charges.

Mr O'Reilly was the front seat passenger in a car on 17 April 2004 when it travelled to Cloverhill Prison where another passenger wanted to deliver clothing to a prisoner.

But while Mr O'Reilly sat waiting outside the prison a large motorcycle with two men on it drove by his window and a number of shots were fired.

According to witnesses, the shots were fired by the pillion passenger. Mr O’Reilly died from his injuries.

The prosecution claim the murder was carried out by the two men on trial.

They say a key witness will tell the jury of ten men and two women he heard conversations between the two men in relation to the killing, and that he also hid a gun and chopped up leather clothing.

This witness, who has not yet given evidence, will also say that one of the accused men, Brian Kenny, had a large green Kawasaki motorbike.
