The Oscar-winning US actress, Anne Bancroft, has died in New York at the age of 73.
A spokesman for her husband, the actor and producer Mel Brooks, said she had been suffering from cancer.
Ms Bancroft was best known for her role as Mrs Robinson in the 1967 film, The Graduate.
Five years earlier she had won an Oscar for Best Actress playing Annie Sullivan, the teacher of the deaf and blind Helen Keller in the film version of The Miracle Worker.
She had already won a Tony theatre award for best actress in the stage version.
