A 35-year-old south Armagh man has appeared in court charged with murdering the 29 people killed in the Omagh bombing in 1998.

Sean Hoey from Molly Road in Jonesborough was also accused of conspiracy to murder members of the security forces, possessing explosives and conspiring to cause explosions.

Mr Hoey said nothing during the short hearing at Craigavon Magistrates' Court and was remanded in custody until next Tuesday.

His solicitor, Peter Corrigan, said his client strongly denies all the charges.

Mr Corrigan said there was no new evidence to support the charges and the prosecution had no realistic prospect of securing any convictions. He added that the charges were politically motivated.
