Gardaí have confirmed that a woman in her 70s has been seriously injured after being struck by a garda patrol car in south Dublin.

It is understood the woman was near a bus shelter on Clonskeagh road when she was struck by the car.

Witnesses said the patrol car was travelling with its siren sounding when the collision took place.

The woman has been taken to St Vincent's Hospital for treatment. Two garda officers who were in the patrol car have been treated for shock.

The bus shelter was destroyed and the garda car was badly damaged in the incident, which is being investigated by gardaí in Donnybrook.

Electricity had to be cut off at the shelter before the garda car could be removed. It was then taken away for examination.

The road was closed for a time as a result of the crash, but has since re-opened.
