The Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, has announced that the Government is giving the Gardaí €6.5m to fund a new operation to tackle organised crime.
Operation Anvil has been set up to tackle the recent spate of gangland murders, armed robberies and gun crime.
The Gardaí say it will be a combination of intelligence-driven and high profile policing.
It will operate in Dublin only and create an extra 15,000 hours in overtime. It will also include covert surveillance on key targets.
The budget for this operation is three times that of the last one, Operation Crossover, but while that was confined to north west Dublin, Anvil will target gangland criminals throughout the city.
