Pope Benedict XVI, in his first Angelus address today, has called for human dignity to be respected in the workplace in a message marking May Day.
Speaking from his apartment window overlooking St Peter's Square, he said 'I hope that the young, especially, will not want for work, and that working conditions will be ever more respectful of the dignity of the human person'.
Addressing some 50,000 pilgrims, the new Pontiff also sent greetings 'with particular affection' to the Orthodox Churches, which are marking Easter today.
The Pope also used the occasion to call for peace in strife-torn
Togo and other countries 'hit by conflict, disease and poverty'.
