An independent counsel is to be asked to investigate Garda papers relating to how a man made a false confession to the murder of two women in Grangegorman in Dublin.
Justice Minister Michael McDowell told the Dáil this afternoon that the inquiry would try to establish how Dean Lyons, who has since died, made a false confession, and whether the confession contained details that could only have been given to him by his Garda interrogators.
Independent TD Tony Gregory asked if the Minister would establish a full public independent inquiry into the matter.
Mr McDowell said he would report to the House on whether a further inquiry was necessary once the review of the Garda papers was complete.
