The United States has strongly condemned the car bomb attack in Lebanon last night in which six people were wounded.

It is not yet clear who carried out the attack, which was the third in the Christian heartland of east Beirut in eight days.

The Deputy US State Department Spokesman, Adam Ereli, has called on officials to create a climate free of fear and intimidation for its people ahead of the May election.

But he said this cannot happen while Syrian military and intelligence forces remain in Lebanon.

Mr Ereli called for a complete and immediate withdrawal of Syrian troops from the country.
