Three people were killed in a bomb explosion at a shopping centre in a mainly Christian area north of the Lebanon capital, Beirut, today.

Five other people were injured.

The attack took place in the town of Kaslik, near the port of Jounie. It followed a bomb blast in suburban Beirut at the weekend in which 11 people were hurt.

The explosions took place at a time of extreme political tension in Lebanon following last month's assassination of the former Prime Minister, Rafiq al-Hariri.

Meanwhile, the European Union has reiterated a call for Syria to withdraw all its forces and security agents from Lebanon in accordance with a 'precise-timetable'.

In conclusions to a two-day EU summit, they also called for the rapid formation of a new Lebanese government.
