The death has taken place this weekend of Chalmers (Terry) Trench, founding secretary and former president of the youth hostel association, An Óige.
Mr Trench, who lived in Slane, Co Meath, was aged 95.
He had a life-long association with the youth hostel movement, attending its first international conferences in the 1930s and serving on An Óige's national council for over 50 years.
Mr Trench was the author of a history of the association. He also wrote a personal memoir entitled ‘Nearly Ninety’, a guide to Slane and many papers and articles on historical and cultural topics.
He is survived by his children, Fiachra, Brian, Beatrice and Patrick.
His wife, the artist Bea Orpen, died in 1980.
