At least five people were killed and more than 30 were wounded after two bomb blasts in the southern city of Kandahar in Afghanistan.

The explosion came as the visiting US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, held talks with Afghan leaders in the capital, Kabul.

Khan Mohammed, a police chief in Kandahar, blamed the blasts on Taliban militants.

Following today’s talks between Ms Rice and the Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, it was announced that Afghanistan’s parliamentary elections will be delayed.

President Karzai said the elections scheduled for May will take place in September due to ‘technical matters’.

Ms Rice said the poll would show ‘the Afghan people's commitment to democracy’.
