Two men have appeared before the Special Criminal Court charged with membership of an illegal organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army.

23-year-old Gareth Kelly, from Wheatfield Avenue, Clondalkin, Dublin, was also charged with the unlawful possession of a .38 calibre revolver and six rounds of ammunition.

44-year-old Robert Humphreys, from Elmdale Crescent, Ballyfermot, Dublin, was charged with possession of explosive substances comprising an improvised electric detonator, two coils of detonating wire and two panel-mounted time delay relays.

At the end of the hearing, which lasted 20 minutes, presiding judge Mr Justice Diarmuid O'Donovan remanded both men in custody until Friday morning, when applications for bail will be heard.
