Former FG TD Michael J O'Higgins dies

The former Fine Gael TD, Senator and solicitor Michael J O'Higgins has died. He was 87.

Mr O'Higgins, who was born in 1917, represented Dublin South West, and later Wicklow, in the Dáil.

He was a member of a well known Irish political family.  In the General Election of 1948, he had the unique distinction of being elected to the same Dáil as his father Dr Tom O'Higgins (Leix-Offaly) and his brother Tom (Cork Borough) - a parliamentary family event which has never been repeated.

He was a member of the Oireachtas for over a quarter of a century. During the Inter-Party Government of 1973-1977, Mr O'Higgins was Leader of the Seanad.

He is survived by his wife Brigid Hogan-O'Higgins, also a former Fine Gael TD (Galway), and eight children, one son having predeceased him.
