Pope John Paul II has been advised not to speak for several days following yesterday's tracheotomy operation.

The Vatican has said that the Pope had spent a peaceful night in the Gemelli Hospital in Rome after his surgery.

Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said this morning: 'The Holy Father spent a night of tranquil rest. This morning he ate breakfast with a good appetite.'

The Italian news agency ANSA said the Pope was breathing without the aid of any respiratory support systems, and a hospital spokesman said he showed no signs of lung infection.

A further medical bulletin on the Pope's condition is not planned before next Monday.

The 84-year-old Pontiff, who suffers from Parkinson's Disease, was rushed back to hospital yesterday when he failed to recover fully from the bout of flu he caught earlier this month.

A Vatican statement last night said the surgery lasted 30 minutes and that the Pope was in a stable condition, and had not been taken to an intensive care unit.
